Wow! So I am used to getting little trinkety presents from the kids in my class around Christmas/Hannukah/whatever. But TODAY took me by surprise. I got flowers brought to me, and a little bag with a teddy bear and some sort of figurine ornament and a gift certificate to the mall. Why you ask? Why, in celebration of the end of Ramadan of course!
I was totally unaware that that was a gift giving sort of celebration. We Jews tend to seperate our fasting from our gift giving. But now that I ponder it, what better way to celebrate the return of midday snacking than by giving joyous gifts to those you like!
The best was responding to "Aww, did one of the kids get you flowers because you're sick" with a totally indignant. "No. They're for RAMADAN. Duh!"
All hail multicultural classrooms.
